Shell & Starfish Embroidered on Denim — Hand Embroidery Tutorial
Some of the best embroidery does not stay inside a hoop. It travels with you — on a pocket, on a cuff, on the collar of a jacket. This little shell-and-starfish pair was stitched directly onto a pair of light-wash jeans, turning an ordinary pocket into a private shoreline.
- Light-wash denim garment (jeans, jacket, or bag)
- Water-soluble fabric marker
- Embroidery needles
- Embroidery floss in shell pink, coral, wine red, dusty rose
- Scissors
- Optional: small embroidery hoop for tension
Use a water-soluble marker to draw a small scallop shell on the denim. A fan shape with a flat base and a rounded top is all you need.
Thread a neutral shell-pink floss and stitch straight lines from the base up to the curved edge. These ribs will guide the rest of the filling.
Add more straight stitches between the first ones, keeping them evenly spaced. The shell begins to look like a half-open fan.
Fill the center of each rib section with short satin stitches in a lighter coral shade. This creates the soft inner curve of the shell.
Switch to a deeper wine-red floss and work satin stitches along the outer edges of the shell. The color shift gives the shell its scalloped, three-dimensional look.
Continue filling until the whole shell is covered. Add a small dark stitch at the base to suggest the hinge where the shell would open.
Take a moment to check the tension. The stitches should lie flat but full, with no gaps showing through the denim weave.
Draw a five-armed starfish near the shell. Use a dusty rose floss to outline one arm with a simple backstitch.
Fill the first arm with satin stitches that follow its length. Keep the stitches close together for a solid, slightly raised surface.
Move to the next arm. Stitched in the same direction, the texture begins to look like the ridged surface of a real sea star.
Continue around the star. The center is still open — that is where the texture will get most interesting.
Fill the fourth arm. By now the starfish is almost complete, with only the center left to finish.
Use French knots or small bullion knots to build up the center of the starfish. This gives it the bumpy, organic core that real starfish have.
Add a few extra knots and tiny stitches around the center so the surface feels uneven and alive, not flat.
Step back and look at the two motifs together. The shell fans outward while the starfish points in five directions — a small, balanced composition on the denim.
The embroidery is done directly on the jeans pocket. There is no need to cut it out or attach it later — it is already part of the clothes you will wear.
A pair of jeans becomes a canvas. A shell and a starfish become souvenirs from a place you have never been — or from a summer you want to keep.
