Educators have scientifically demonstrated that a person should read three thousand books in a lifetime.

If one's reading falls short, one feels spiritually empty, lost, and creatively exhausted—just as from insufficient nourishment.

A lifetime holds roughly a hundred thousand meals; if intake is insufficient, the body hungers and grows anxious. The spiritual world is no different.

Reading is to the brain what aerobic exercise is to the body—profoundly significant.

True reading is far more than skimming words; it comprises seven interlocking steps:

First, recognition—identifying words and symbols, the foundation of reading.

Second, absorption—letting information travel through the optic nerve into the brain.

Third, comprehension—integrating the information read and clarifying its threads.

Fourth, insight—infusing personal thought and wisdom to elevate understanding.

Fifth, retention—storing key points and inspiration in memory.

Sixth, recall—accurately retrieving stored information when needed.

Seventh, communication—using solid input to support high-quality output and exchange.

All reading ultimately serves communication and exchange; without solid input, there can be no brilliant output.

Each human eye has 130 million light receptors; both eyes together possess 260 million.

Yet most people use only the central 20% of their visual field, wasting 80% of their potential for decades.

Try placing both index fingers ten centimeters before your eyes, gazing at a distant point straight ahead, then slowly spread them apart—

You will be surprised to find that your horizontal field of vision is even vaster than the span of your outstretched arms.

This idle 80% is precisely the territory we urgently need to explore.

The prototype of speed reading originated, surprisingly, from the Royal Air Force during World War I.

Pilots then could not distinguish friendly from enemy aircraft at a distance, so scientists invented the "tachistoscope"—

which flashed images on a large screen at diminishing intervals to train recognition.

After training, ordinary people could identify a plane the size of a speck within two-thousandths of a second.

People thus inferred: applying this visual power to reading would surely bring a qualitative leap.

The world speed reading record holder, Anne Jones, reads 4,251 words per minute.

Untrained ordinary readers manage only two to three hundred words per minute—a gap of more than tenfold.

The same 250-page book takes an ordinary reader ten and a half hours, but a master only one hour.

Over a year, others read 365 books while you read only 36—the reading volume of a lifetime would take you ten years to match.

The book offers nine techniques to guide the eyes in rapid reading; only diligent practice can master them:

First, double-line sweeping—reading two lines at once, advancing in sync.

Second, variable sweeping—scanning multiple lines at a time, the origin of "ten lines at a glance."

Third, reverse sweeping—reading from right to left, breaking the conventional order.

Fourth, S-shaped sweeping—gliding across the page in an S-shaped path.

Fifth, zigzag sweeping—weaving up and down in a zigzag trail.

Sixth, circular sweeping—reading in diagonal loops, back and forth.

Seventh, vertical wavy sweeping—descending top to bottom with a slight wave.

Eighth, dual-edge sweeping—fixing on the first and last characters of each line, moving straight down.

Ninth, simple S-shaped—a light sweep across the page, done in a flash.

The greatest enemy of speed reading is vocalized reading—whether aloud or silent.

As long as an inner voice reads along, speed is drastically reduced.

The untrained spend 90% of their time subvocalizing; to speed up, one must reduce this proportion in stages.

Drop it to 60% in the second stage, 40% in the third, and finally to no more than 5%.

When 95% of reading time is entrusted to vision, reading speed will leap qualitatively.

Many worry: if I read faster, will comprehension suffer?

On the contrary—speed reading does not impair comprehension; it enhances it.

Consider two renderings: "Science, proves, that, speed, reading, is..." versus "Science proves that speed reading aids comprehension better than slow reading."

Which is easier to understand? The answer is self-evident.

Just as a highway far outperforms a muddy path, fluid reading turns text into scene after scene, vividly presented before your eyes.

The insights from The Speed Reading Book go far beyond technique itself.

First, repeating past methods yields only past results.

To change inefficient reading, one must first change the tools and methods, and learn from the path of masters.

Second, everyone harbors immense reading potential, waiting to be awakened.

Two hundred and sixty million light receptors are fertile soil yet to be tilled.

Third, speed reading is a learnable, trainable skill—not an innate gift.

From Buffett to Bill Gates, from Kennedy to Masayoshi Son, the exceptional all master this art.

Bill Gates once admitted: if he could surpass Buffett's reading speed, he would be even more successful than he is now.

Fourth, mastering this skill benefits not only yourself but can be passed to your family and the next generation.

To help your children love reading is to give them life's most precious gift.

As psychology reminds us: you cannot give your children what you yourself do not possess.

Fifth, in any language, the commonly used vocabulary is only about a thousand words; master the methods of rapid learning, and you can easily acquire several languages.

Combined with The Speed Reading Book, Use Your Memory, and The Mind Map Book, the path of learning will be unobstructed.

May everyone who opens this book transform from a reading novice into a reading master.

And thus embark on a lifelong journey of reading, meeting a better self amid the sea of books.

I am your book recommender Huoer, looking forward to meeting you again in the world of books.
